St Cyres school, Wales transform % level results with new Apple iPad tablet ‒ XMA Case Study

St Cyres school is level 18 mixed comprehensive school. In 2010 what I inherited was school but was utterly in terms of its results in 2013 our level 2 plus school was 49% I’ve
improved to 61% the following year to 60 percent a year followed mat and then
2016 major jump to 71% is it all down to the technology it certainly helps good
teaching is obviously the backbone of everything the problem was that we had a
1950s building with some 60s and early 70s additions which is totally
unsuitable for the vision of Education that I had when I sat down with my staff
and said ok the IT facility we can have in this new school can be a replication
of what we already have or it means something quite different every words
moved to 1:1 technology what would it look like.
So we started with this idea of the tablets to be available whenever we
needed it every room could become a computer room with the other tablet in
it but we even went as far as we had a room set up exactly the same way as our
classrooms are here we had a flat-screen TV on the wall with a sound bar and that
will TV and we said to people get in there try it you know use it the more
this familiar the more that we are happy with things and that we are familiar
with them and we know what we doing with them them then the smoother the
transition will be atmosphere Lewis bonded it’s the leaders group where one
member snapping its faculty was pregnant we didn’t look they saw the key areas
that were looking at technology in the classroom so design technology music one
of people who would experiment with something and realize oh maybe that
didn’t work and then maybe try something else and feedback to the group of the
realisation was that actually it was only an iPad and we infrastructure
around that but really kind of took all of us when we moved in occupy the new
building obviously has to there was a role of the iPads in year 13, 12 and 11 they were the priority within a very short period of time by January 7 to two and a
half months we actually rolled out to each year group every people in the
school those youngsters would make use of as iPods initially of the dispute and
then of course other year groups the immigrants and sisters will be clamoring
for the same devices because they saw what they were doing with them
what are the key things that we wanted is for our students to have what they
needed when you needed it wherever they are and we wanted to happen to me the
way your students learn the way students consume media we spent in the early days. A lot of time working with iBooks Author which was a key that a software that
steered us in this direction there’s nothing like good or bad it’s going to
software allows staff with fairly mediocre IQ skills to clip the most
amazing-looking media which results the first thing I’ll do when and designing
a new course is I will start with adding we use activities which are
such tasks either through the iBook type speaker King stage 3 or
participation will define or provide a list of tasks at the end which are based
on simple statements I think it’s great easy is convenient you needn’t be more
productive of my time outside of school and within school it means I can get my
work done early it means they don’t fall behind.
We’re very lucky here the staff are incredibly positive they will be after
trying new ideas and it was a bit like pushing against an open door already
we were looking for a partner really going to help us and make sure that this
roller is coming with effectively and they were a great company to work with
every roll of evening colleagues from XMA were there too for parents
and they were especially important in giving us some advice and some of the
background infrastructure that we needed them getting in place in all so far you
know 1200, 1300 iPads to work with in this side the feedback we’ve had from friends
has been fantastic since because people are now saying I love the idea I can see
what my child is doing I love the idea that my child is working out of the
classroom on resources I like to see their progress the messages that are
coming through the homework that doesn’t need to be written down any more when
you give people the tools to a job better than the results speak for
themselves
