Winner of the 2016 Generation Nano: Small Science, Superheroes Contest – Nanoman

Eric Liu designed a superhealer for his superhero.
Nanoman represents nanomedicine being developed to fight cancer, or in this comic, “Cancer,
a malignant crab-monster,” lurking inside patients. But before Nanoman can fight Cancer,
he needs to find his crabby nemesis. Nanotechnology-enabled sensors, more sensitive than traditional
methods for detecting cancer thanks to their small size and increased surface area, allow
doctors to diagnose cancer even earlier, giving Nanoman the upper hand. One group from the
University of Pennsylvania is working on a nanotechnology-based sensor more sensitive
than a dog’s nose, capable of “sniffing out” skin cancer long before a doctor can
see it.
